Diabetes Surgery (Diabetes Surgery): Diabetes Facts

Diabetes kills one person every ten seconds in the modern world. It is one of the world’s top ten causes of death. Diabetes-related health-care costs are extremely high around the world. Type 2 diabetes affects 90% of diabetics, and almost all of them are related to obesity. While the population prevalence of type 2 diabetes is 8-9 percent, approximately 25% of obese patients have diabetes. Diabetes

Diabetes is classified into two types: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is a type of insulin-dependent diabetes that develops in childhood. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, begins in adulthood, is not insulin dependent, and accounts for 90% of diabetics. Regular exercise, medication, weight loss, and diet programs are all recommended in the treatment of this disease. Diabetes progresses in the majority of patients, necessitating the use of more medication and, in some cases, the switching of insulin. As a result, diabetes mellitus is regarded as a chronic and progressive disease.

Surgery for Diabetes

Diabetes surgeries are used to treat diabetes, as it is commonly known. In fact, all of these procedures are referred to as metabolic surgeries. Obesity surgery includes metabolic surgeries. But the goal is different. If it is done to treat obesity, it is referred to as obesity surgery; if it is done to treat metabolic diseases, it is referred to as metabolic surgery.

When discussing diabetes surgery, different surgeries from obesity surgeries should not be considered. The surgeries used are identical. When a patient is operated on for diabetes, the procedure is referred to as metabolic surgery rather than obesity surgery.

The World Obesity Societies do not recommend metabolic surgery for diabetics who are underweight (body mass index below 30). These procedures are not advised for patients who are not overweight and do not have diabetes. Because there haven’t been enough studies on it, and there’s no information on its long-term effects.

a)Gastric bypass;

b) gastric band;

c) Sleeve gastrectomy (tube stomach);

d) duodenal switch.

Diabetes surgery, also known as metabolic surgery, consists of four procedures that are widely accepted around the world. These are surgeries that have been used for a long time in the world and have shown long-term results.

  1. Gastric bypass surgery: This is one of the oldest traditional procedures. It was widely used in the past, but its popularity is dwindling. You can read more about the technical aspects of gastric bypass surgery on our gastric bypass page. It is effective in diabetes and is one of the most commonly used diabetes surgeries. Sugar levels improve as a result of weight loss, a decrease in the ghrelin hormone, and an increase in the GLP-1 hormone.
  2. Gastric band: On the stomach band, a silicone band with adjustable narrowness is placed on the upper part of the stomach. Its popularity has dwindled significantly in recent years. The goal is to limit one’s eating. It does not cause the same hormonal changes as other surgeries. The patient’s diabetes improves as a result of weight loss.
  3. Sleeve gastrectomy (tube stomach-stomach reduction) is the most commonly performed obesity and metabolic surgery in the world. You can read more about the technical aspects on our tube stomach page. According to some studies, it is as effective as gastric bypass in the treatment of diabetes. GLP-1, the ghrelin hormone, undergoes hormonal changes in the same way that gastric bypass does.
  4. Duodenal Switch: It is used in less than 1% of the world. It’s a very potent operation. However, because it has numerous side effects, it is only used when absolutely necessary since it results in severe malabsorption.

Aside from these surgeries, various variations of these surgeries are used. Surgeries such as transit bipartition and mini gastric bypass have recently been performed. The long-term effects of these surgeries, however, are unknown. Three of the standard surgeries described above are extremely effective, with positive outcomes.
